Proper patient identification is essential, particularly when working on hospital floors, to maintain accuracy and prevent errors. Always label vials with the patient’s name and date to ensure precise record-keeping.

Part of your role will involve assessing patients’ ability to undergo the procedure and providing clear explanations to ease any concerns they may have. This fosters trust and cooperation, resulting in a smoother experience for both patient and practitioner.

Here’s a summary of the core duties you’ll need to master as a Phlebotomist:

  • Collect and draw blood samples with precision and care.
  • Ensure proper patient identification, especially in hospital settings.
  • Accurately label vials with patient details for reliable record-keeping.
  • Assess patients’ ability to undergo procedures and address their concerns.
  • Clearly explain the blood-drawing process and provide reassurance.
  • Conduct basic point-of-care tests, such as blood glucose measurements.
  • Prepare blood, urine, and other specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Verify patient and donor identity at all stages.
