EKG Classes in CT: Program Overview

CPCT/ANHA Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant
EKG is one of the exam's content areas

This EKG technician intro training consists of 24 hours of classroom (theory) and hands-on skills. Each student learns the basic theoretical component approved by the State of Connecticut and is trained on the competency skills that prepare them for the final exam with the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Our EKG course is built to finish your Patient Care Technician (PCT) training. Pair it with CNA and Phlebotomy and you’re eligible to sit for the NHA CPCT/A exam. Already a CNA? You only need Phlebotomy and EKG. Already a phlebotomist? You need CNA and EKG.

Good to know: this is not a full EKG Technician (NHA CET) exam-prep course. It teaches the EKG skills and theory covered on the PCT exam.

Our EKG program is the only 3-day EKG program in all of Connecticut: 2 days of live instruction on Zoom and 1 day in the lab running real 12-lead EKGs. Our students come from across Connecticut, including Stamford, New Haven, Hartford, Waterbury, Stafford and Bristol.

What Is an EKG Technician and What Do They Do?

An EKG (electrocardiogram) technician is a healthcare worker who records the heart’s electrical activity by placing electrodes on a patient and running an EKG machine. The tracing helps doctors spot rhythm problems, heart attacks and other heart conditions. Many EKG-trained workers in Connecticut are Patient Care Technicians who also handle patient care and blood draws.
Patient Care Technicians who run EKGs work alongside nurses and physicians in hospitals, cardiology offices, urgent care and nursing facilities. On the job you’ll:

Set up an EKG machine and assist with stress tests

Prepare patient files for the physician

    Schedule appointments as needed

    Identify basic EKG rhythms

Place 12-lead electrodes on the right landmarks

Take vital signs and explain the test to patients

Protect patient privacy when printing and uploading EKGs

What Is the Difference Between an EKG Technician (CET) and a Patient Care Technician (PCT)?

A Certified EKG Technician (CET) focuses only on EKGs and cardiac monitoring. A Patient Care Technician combines CNA patient care, phlebotomy and EKG in one role, which is why hospitals hire PCTs for so many floors.
Our EKG course is the EKG piece of the PCT. More on PCT certification → · EKG certification (CET) explained →

    Hands-On EKG Training

We don’t just teach from slides. On lab day you’ll prep patients, place leads on anatomical landmarks, check machine speed and sensitivity, and run, print and upload 10 live 12-lead EKGs, the same work you’ll do on your first day as a PCT.

EKG Technician and PCT Salary in CT

    $23.34/hr
Average hourly pay for Patient Care Technicians in Connecticut (Indeed, 2026).
EKG technicians in Connecticut average about $22.74 an hour ($47,302 a year), according to ZipRecruiter (Sept 2026). Patient Care Technicians, who add EKG to CNA and phlebotomy skills, average a little more.
Adding EKG to your CNA and Phlebotomy skills qualifies you for PCT roles that pay more than CNA or phlebotomy alone and open doors on hospital floors, telemetry units and cardiology practices.

FAQs About EKG Technician Training in CT

    Program and schedule

No. This is a 24-hour EKG course built for our Patient Care Technician pathway. It covers the EKG content on the NHA CPCT/A exam. It isn’t a full CET exam-prep program.
24 hours. The day program runs 3 days, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Monday–Wednesday or Wednesday–Friday): 2 days on Zoom and 1 hands-on lab day. The evening program runs 5 evenings, 5:00 to 10:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
The EKG course takes 3 days. To sit for the NHA Patient Care Technician exam you also need CNA and Phlebotomy. If you already have both, you’re exam-ready right after this course.
It’s hybrid. Two days are live on Zoom, and one day is an in-person lab where you perform live EKGs. The lab can’t be done online.
You must successfully complete 10 live EKGs during the lab to graduate.
If you live in Connecticut, likely yes. EKG labs run at Middlebury (Waterbury area), East Hartford (Hartford area) and Woodbridge (New Haven area). The Zoom days can be done from anywhere.
Yes, within 3 months of your original start date. Email [email protected]. After 3 months you’d need to re-register and pay again, and your original campus or time isn’t guaranteed.

    Cost and requirements

The program total is $500: $250 tuition, $50 supplies and a $200 non-refundable registration fee. The NHA Patient Care Technician exam ($175.58) is extra.
Yes. You can use Klarna Buy Now, Pay Later or one of our school payment plans. Call (203) 391-6766 to set one up.
The EKG course on its own isn’t listed for WIOA funding. Our Hybrid Patient Care Technician program, which includes EKG, is on Connecticut’s Eligible Training Provider List, so eligible students can get WIOA funding for the full PCT program.
Rescheduling costs $25 per day, and make-up days must be done within 2 months of your original end date. Documented court orders, COVID and approved medical emergencies are excused.
Yes. Students need CNA and Phlebotomy, either completed in the past with valid proof or taken with us as part of the Hybrid PCT program.
You must be 18 or older, the same as our Patient Care Technician program.
Yes. The evening program runs 5 evenings, 5:00 to 10:00 PM, Monday through Friday, for the same 24 hours. Check the class calendar for the next evening start.
Not to take the course. The NHA requires a high school diploma or GED to sit for the CPCT/A exam.

    EKG technician careers

Connecticut doesn’t license EKG technicians. Employers look for EKG training and a national certification. At Northeast Medical Institute, you learn EKG in our 3-day hybrid course and pair it with CNA and Phlebotomy to earn the NHA Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A) credential, which covers EKG.
Our EKG course takes 3 days. If you already have CNA and Phlebotomy, you can sit for the NHA CPCT/A exam right after. Starting from scratch, our Hybrid PCT program (CNA + Phlebotomy + EKG) takes about 5 weeks on the day schedule.
Not fully. You can learn the theory online, but you need hands-on practice performing EKGs on real people. That’s why our course pairs 2 Zoom days with an in-person lab day where you complete 10 live EKGs.
Most students find it very manageable. The hardest parts are memorizing lead placement and learning to recognize rhythms, and both get easier with hands-on practice. Our course has 3 short quizzes and a lab day with an instructor checking every EKG you run.
Connecticut doesn’t require one by law, but most employers want a national credential. The two common ones from the NHA are the Certified EKG Technician (CET) and the Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A). Our course prepares you for the EKG portion of the CPCT/A. Read our full EKG certification guide →
Yes. Many hospitals have CNAs and PCTs run EKGs once they’re trained. A CNA who adds Phlebotomy and EKG can become a certified Patient Care Technician, and running EKGs is part of a PCT’s daily work.
In Connecticut the pay is close: EKG technicians average about $22.74 an hour (ZipRecruiter, 2026), phlebotomists earn a median $22.03 and nursing assistants $21.53 (BLS, May 2025). Patient Care Technicians, who combine all three skills, average about $23.34 an hour (Indeed, 2026).
For many people, yes. It’s one of the fastest ways into hospital work, and it pairs well with CNA and phlebotomy. Adding EKG qualifies you for PCT roles on telemetry, cardiology and emergency units, and it’s a solid step toward nursing, PA or other healthcare careers.

    Certification

Students who meet every requirement receive a Certificate of Achievement in EKG Technician from Northeast Medical Institute.
Once you’ve completed CNA, Phlebotomy and EKG, apply to the NHA and pass the CPCT/A exam. Read the full PCT certification guide →
Provide medical documentation two weeks before your exam, then register through NHAnow.com. NHA processing takes 3–4 weeks.
Connecticut PCTs average about $23.34 an hour, according to Indeed (2026).
